Preamble

At its meeting on 3 March 1998 the University Council accepted a series of recommendations drafted in response to an approach from the Australian Cancer Foundation and Heart Foundation requesting that the University adopt their Tobacco Policy in regard to research funds and the 1996 Australian Cancer Society 'no tobacco policy'.

Policy

The University will not accept funding from tobacco related sources for health or health-related research. The University will not normally accept funding from tobacco related sources for non-health related research.

Procedures

1. The University will not accept funding from tobacco related sources for health research.

2. The University will not accept funding from tobacco related sources for health-related research.

3. The University will not accept funding from tobacco related sources for non-health related research, except in exceptional circumstances.

3.1    The acceptance of any funding from tobacco related sources for non-health related research requires the prior approval of the Vice Chancellor.

3.2    A requirement of the acceptance of any such funding is that the University will retain responsibility for and control of the publishing of the research results.

3.3    Staff wishing to apply for funding from any tobacco related source for non-health related research should initially discuss their application with the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President (Research & Enterprise) prior to making any submission.

4. For the purpose of this policy, a tobacco related source is defined as a member of the tobacco industry and includes the Tobacco Institute as well as individual companies, or their component parts, whose primary business is the manufacture, distribution, promotion and sale of tobacco and related products.
