Feeling anxious about exams?
In order to keep your exam anxiety at a level that allows you to perform at your best, it's important to learn to respond to your anxiety in ways that help you better manage it. Here are some strategies for managing exam anxiety effectively.
Assess your anxiety
Whether your anxiety is helping or hindering your performance can be determined by your response towards an exam. If words like focused, alert and excited come to mind, then you are benefiting from the extra adrenalin. On the other hand, if worried, nervous and afraid describe your response, it may be hard to focus.
Respond to your anxiety
Fear and stress are normal responses to a lack of preparation. However, if you are well prepared, but still over anxious about an exam, then you can try to better manage it by working through your feelings, thoughts and behaviour.
Change your thinking
Use your imagination to think positively and visualise yourself performing well. This will help you feel calmer and more optimistic about exams. Recognise that worrying about what you have not done or what might happen adds to your stress level and is wasted energy. It is also useful to incorporate some breathing exercises which will help you to focus and relax your mind.
Change your behaviour
Exams are physically, mentally and emotionally demanding, so you will need to look after yourself too if want to successfully make it through SWOTVAC and the exam period. Keep a good routine that includes daily exercise, eating well and maintaining good sleep patterns.
If you feel you might need extra help with managing your anxiety around exams, you can talk to one of highly qualified counsellors. During this busy period appointments might not be available immediately, so it’s best to book ahead of time to ensure you can get a spot for when you need it.

Workshop: Check your stories
Wednesday 26 October, 8.00am – 9.00am, Online
Stories can help us define who we are, as it is our stories that create our feelings, and our feelings that create our responses to the situations we face. By controlling your stories, you are more likely to be able to have more control over your feelings, and therefore more control over how you respond. This workshop will help you learn to recognise the limiting stories you’re telling yourself and the stories that move you away from being the best version of yourself.
