Academic Review

Academic Review is the process which monitors student academic progress and identifies students who need assistance to get back on track with their studies. UniSA runs academic review mid-year and at the end of the year in four review rounds.

Students are identified as making unsatisfactory progress if they:

  • Fail a course for the second time.
  • Fail 50% or more courses in an academic review period.
  • Fail a practice-based learning activity, where that failure constitutes failure in the course.

Notifications

Students who are identified as making unsatisfactory progress will be contacted by Campus Central and sent an official notification email. There are a several types of notifications depending on the risk to student’s enrolment in their program.

Notification 1

Students are identified as making unsatisfactory progress for the first time. Students are strongly advised to take action early on to address the issues that are affecting their studies. It is important that students are provided with academic counselling and encouraged to seek further academic support and complete an Academic Support Plan.

Students on Notification 1 status, especially early in their program, are considered to be at high risk of progressing to Notification 3, if not provided with support.

Notification 2

Students are identified as making unsatisfactory progress for the second time. Similar to Notification 1, students are strongly advised to take action and seek academic counselling.

Notification 3 – Preclusion

Students receive this notification if:

  • Failing a course for a second time, or
  • Failing 50% or more of courses in  a academic review period, or
  • Failing a practice-based learning activity, where that failure constitutes failure in the course

Students identified for Notification 3 will be up for preclusion. If they believe they have compelling circumstances that have affected their studies, they may submit an Appeal against Preclusion. Students who are precluded have their enrolments in their program cancelled and they lose their place in the program. They are prevented from being re-admitted in the same program or a program in the same discipline for two years.
